  2. DESQview 2.+ Technical Note

  4. STARTING WITH THE LOADER:
  5.  
  6. If copy protection has been removed from your copy of Lotus 1-2-3 
  7. version 2 or Symphony 1.1, or if your copy never had it (Lotus 
  8. Corp. does provide such a version to large customers),  the 
  9. default installation for Lotus or Symphony will not succeed in 
  10. opening the Lotus window.  There is a simple reason for this and 
  11. a simple solution.  Run "Change a Program" from the DESQview Open 
  12. Window menu and select Lotus or Symphony as the program you want 
  13. to change.  When the configuration menu comes up, look at the 
  14. line labled "Program".  It will be listed as:
  15.  
  16.      C:\DV\LS-LOAD.COM 
  17.  
  18. and the "Parameters" line will be:
  19.  
  20.      123.COM
  21.  
  22. The problem here is that on a non-protected Lotus system, there 
  23. is no 123.COM file, the file is called 123.EXE.  What you need to 
  24. do is tab down to the parameters line and leaving the rest of the 
  25. line intact, change the "COM" to "EXE".  Then the program will 
  26. load normally.

  29. "Out of Memory" Messages:
  30.  
  31. If you receive an "Out of Memory" message while loading a Lotus or 
  32. Symphony spreadsheet or document, it is likely that Lotus or 
  33. Symphony have run out of CONVENTIONAL memory.  While these 
  34. programs can use expanded (LIM) memory, they also tend to spread 
  35. out in the conventional memory partition as well.  If you get 
  36. this message while running these programs in DESQview, run Change 
  37. a Program and try increasing the "Memory Size in K" item by 20K 
  38. or so until the spreadsheet loads.  If you feel you have memory 
  39. to spare, you can make things easy on yourself by leaving the 
  40. "Memory Size in K" item as is and then hitting F1 for advanced 
  41. options and set "Maximum Program Memory Size in K" to 640.  While 
  42. it is unlikely you will have 640K free for a partition, 
  43. configured in this manner, DESQview will give Lotus as much 
  44. conventional memory as it can find.
  45.  
  46. Please note: You must close and reopen the Lotus or Symphony 
  47. window before the memory change will take effect.
  48. Running Lotus with HAL:
  49.  
  50. Lotus can be loaded with HAL in DESQview and still be used in the 
  51. small window.  The trick is to modify the Command to Start 
  52. Program so the the DESQview Lotus loader loads in HAL instead.  
  53. HAL then will load 123.  Assuming the HAL files were in the 123 
  54. subdirectory and the 123 subdirectory is listed in the Path to 
  55. Data Files,  you would make the "Program" line as follows:

  57.      C:\DV\LS-LOAD.COM 
  58.  
  59. and the parameters line:
  60.  
  61.      HAL.EXE
  62.  
  63. You will also have to increase the "Memory Size in K" figure by 
  64. an extra 120K to accommodate the extra overhead of HAL.
